The ASICS GEL-Kinsei™ Arrives

The new benchmark in technical running shoes.

IRVINE, CA (August 22, 2005) — It all started with a quest to be the best…vision to redefine the limits of possibility in technical athletic footwear. The ASICS® GEL-Kinsei was born as a mission to be the ultimate adaptable “smart” shoe, positioned in a brand new category, even a notch above the legendary GEL-Kayano®. As product development progressed, the design and engineering excellence that ASICS consistently strives for became the “Kinsei”, or “golden star”. The GEL-Kinsei will debut in the ASICS Marathon Store inside the ING New York City Marathon expo with a limited quantity of shoes for sale. It will then become available at specialty running stores on February 1, 2006.

The upper of the new GEL-Kinsei defines the soul of the shoe: fast, edgy, and technical. The highlight of the upper is a newly developed, Japanese mesh called Spacemaster-UV1 . Conceived by observing the unique properties of marine coral, Spacemaster-UV is very breathable, remarkably strong, and is about 30% lighter than regular polyester mesh. The materials used in Spacemaster-UV provide much better UV shielding by not only absorbing but also reflecting the sun’s heat rays.

Men’s ASICS GEL-Kinsei

Shown above in the men’s White/Sport Red/Neutral Grey colorway, the GEL-Kinsei’s visually stunning Discrete Heel Unit takes ASICS’ Impact Guidance System to an entirely new level.

Heel Unit:

The visually stunning Discrete Heel Unit takes the Impact Guidance System (I.G.S.®) to another level by creating our highest degree of shock attenuation and stability. The Discrete Heel Unit has an infinite ability to adapt because there are many different parts interrelating, but with the ability to work independently. The cushioning and stability parameters of the shoe are provided by separate and very interactive rearfoot GEL columns.

The midsole is the engine room of performance athletic footwear, and the GEL-Kinsei has reset the parameters of performance technology. The cradle is unlike any ever designed before. It comprises a revolutionary new two-piece construction that wraps under the heel to form the support system for the Discrete Heel Unit. Contoured and protective, the cradle extends all the way to the forefoot, incorporating the SpaceWomen’s ASICS GEL-KinseiTrusstic System™ at the midfoot. Enhanced cushioning properties, a crucial factor when runners touch down or toe-off, were achieved on an innovative two-fold scale: through the use of the ASICS new Solyte™ midsole material and ASICS “Twist” GEL® Cushioning System. Solyte is a durable advanced co-polymer that is lighter than standard EVA and ASICS SpEVA®.

Once again, ASICS has shown what it can do when design vision is teamed with ingenious know-how. With the GEL-Kinsei, ASICS introduces a new platform to the world that showcases the true innovation and the ability to set benchmarks for the future. With its modern, impressive look, the GEL-Kinsei is the undisputed pinnacle of product performance when runners look for the latest, the newest and most technically advanced athletic footwear. Just put on a pair of GEL-Kinsei and Keep Running.

[Editor’s Note: Professor K will be serving up a review of the GEL-Kinsei along with an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the development of this remarkable new shoe in the April ’06 issue of Sole Collector.]
